The Ludlow Train Viewing Platform on the city plaza has recently been connected to the RAILSTREAM website, allowing railroad fans to view moving trains traveling across the U.S. and Canada. Thanks to the work of Andy Wartman, rail liaison and member of the local Heritage Museum Board, now the over thirty trains that come through town every day can be viewed live with a camera installed at the Train Viewing Platform which operates 24/7 every day of the year.
So what exactly is RAILSTREAM and what are its benefits? RAILSTREAM is a railfanning website with 46 motion cameras that enable viewers from over 175 countries to tune in every day to watch the cameras. This global fan base has led its organizers to expand mobile and television applications. With over 120,000 active installations, railfans consume nearly 2 million hours of video every month. The goal is to simulate a trackside railfan experience. And many of these have radio feeds with commentary.
As Andy Wartman states, RAILSTREAM “brings the world to Ludlow and Ludlow to the world.” Currently Ludlow is the only rail town in Kentucky that is part of this project. The hope is that viewers will be attracted to learn more about Ludlow’s rail history and visit the Historic District, neighborhoods and shops. RAILSTREAM can also be viewed by accessing the website of the Ludlow Heritage Museum located next to the Elm St. City Building on the plaza. (www.ludlowheritagemuseum.com)
