Historic District/L.A.L. Program
The Historic District of Ludlow, Kentucky contains an excellent collection of early 19th century through early 20th century urban house styles and commercial buildings. The area is significant not only for its quality and quantity of architecture but also for its display of the evolution of styles during the development of the city. Commercial and residential structures can be found in all types of architectural styles, including Victorian, Italianate, Queen Anne, Stick, Shingle, Craftsman, American Foursquare, Bungalow, and simple vernacular. The purpose of the Urban Development Review Board (UDRB) is to review and recommend approval, approval with conditions or denial of projects within certain zoning districts, and buildings.

The Ludlow Architectural Landmark (LAL) plaques are intended to mark, commemorate, and celebrate Ludlow’s historic buildings and to encourage their preservation and restoration. It is vital to preserve and celebrate Ludlow’s history and its buildings. Historic buildings help preserve the economic investment, culture, history, architectural style, and general character of our city. Buildings may be awarded LAL status for several reasons. The building may be one of the earliest buildings in town, a model example of a style of architecture or have surviving intricate detailing, was the home or workplace of well-known person, the location of famous event, instrumental to the development of the town, or simply well-preserved and maintained over its existence.
